Operative1(Volume), Bedford

We are looking for an Operative who can specialise in one of the following disciplines: Signalling & Telecoms, Track, Offtrack, Undertrack, Distribution & Plant, or Overhead lines.

Signalling & Telecoms: Work with signals, level crossings, and point systems. Develop technical skills across manual, electrical, and digital equipment.

Track: Maintain, inspect, and repair the track network (Permanent Way). Manual work with rails, sleepers, ballast and associated structures.

Offtrack: Maintain, inspect, and repair land next to the track, including vegetation management, drainage and ancillary structures.

Undertrack: Maintain, inspect, and repair equipment under the track, focusing on joinery, lubrication and welding.

Distribution & Plant: Keep power flowing through electrified rails; work on nuts, bolts and cables of the electrification system.

Overhead lines: Work with high‑voltage systems at height to measure, adjust, repair and modify cables and wires.

Operatives work outdoors in all weather conditions, day and night, often transporting kit across tricky terrain and working near moving trains at high speed.

• Proactive planning: punctual, with a van and equipment ready, anticipating team needs.
• Working under pressure: remain calm outdoors with trains passing nearby.

• Shift work: rotating days, nights and weekends.
• Outdoor working: comfortable working in all weather conditions.
• Safe working: subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessment and BPSS pre‑employment checks.
• Driving licence: category B required to drive Network Rail vehicles.
• Commute: within a 60‑minute commute of the location.

£30 351 – £35 785 depending on discipline.
