Job Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated trainee physician (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership and management to join the Division of Medicine at North Bristol NHS Trust as a Chief Registrar. This role offers a 40% protected time for leadership and management development, allowing the successful candidate to develop a portfolio of skills that will support future consultant posts and leadership roles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a bridge between junior doctors, senior clinicians, and managerial staff to improve engagement.
  • Lead quality improvement and service development initiatives to improve patient outcomes.
  • Plan, develop, and improve education and training activities, and support other trainees.
  • Engage in workforce planning, transformation, and staff deployment.
  • Work across teams and across boundaries to influence change and engage stakeholders.
Clinical Duties

The role involves 60% clinical work, with 40% protected time for Chief Registrar duties.

Person Specification – Essential Criteria
  • Full GMC registration.
  • ST4 or above, currently in a medical specialty training programme (ideally internal medicine) and evidence of satisfactory progress through training, including ARCP outcomes.
  • Experience and interest in teaching, both undergraduate and postgraduate, across disciplines.
  • Ability to apply sound clinical judgement, manage acute medical take, and lead independent ward rounds.
  • Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to lead and motivate others.
  • Demonstrated values and behaviours consistent with the NHS Leadership Academy Healthcare Leadership Model.
Desirable Criteria
  • Evidence of skills in the management of acute medical emergencies (e.g., ALERT, IMPACT certification, ALS instructor).
Application Process

This is a fixed‑term role for a minimum of 12 months. Applicants must discuss their application with their educational supervisor and training programme director, and receive permission from the TPD prior to applying.

Career Development

Senior registrars will participate in the Royal College of Physicians London Chief Registrar Programme beginning August/September 2026, which includes travel. Travel and accommodation expenses will be available.
