Ready for a change? Would you like to join our friendly, supportive, and forward‑thinking team? We are looking to recruit a Medical Receptionist on a 20‑25 hour per week basis. The role involves receiving, assisting, and directing patients to the appropriate service or healthcare professional in a courteous, efficient and effective way. This role provides general assistance to the Practice team and projects a positive image to patients and visitors, in person and via telephone.
Responsibilities- Ensure an effective and efficient reception service is provided to patients and other visitors.
- Deal with general enquiries, explain procedures and make new and follow‑up appointments.
- Use judgement to triage patients with urgent needs without prior appointments.
- Explain practice arrangements and formal requirements to new patients and those seeking temporary cover.
- Receive and make telephone calls, divert calls and take accurate messages for prompt delivery.
- Enter requests for home visits into the clinical system, recording details and, when necessary, referring to the Duty Doctor.
- Process repeat prescription requests; ensure they are ready for patient collection within 48 hours.
- Complete any action required by clinicians for further information or patient contact details.
- Advise patients of relevant charges for private services, accept payment and issue receipts.
- Enter patient information into the computer as required.
- Prepare clinical rooms for surgeries, supply prescription forms, and maintain adequate consumables.
- Open premises at the start of the day, deactivate the alarm and prepare to receive patients.
- Secure the premises at the end of the day, ensuring lights are off and the alarm is activated.
- Register new patients onto the computer system promptly and accurately.
- Provide holiday and sick cover for colleagues as needed.
- Keep the kitchen and waiting room tidy.
- Undertake additional duties as requested by the Senior Receptionist, Practice Manager, or Partners.
- Process incoming and outgoing mail according to practice protocols.
- Record actions taken in patient records or in accordance with practice protocols.
- Complete daily, weekly and monthly core tasks to support smooth operation of the reception area.
All patient information is handled with strict confidentiality, in line with practice policies and procedures protecting personal and sensitive data.
Health & Safety- Use personal security systems within the workplace.
- Identify risks and manage them appropriately.
- Apply infection control procedures and maintain tidy work areas.
- Report potential risks and act as a chaperone when requested by a clinician.
Support the equality, diversity and rights of patients, carers and colleagues, acting in a welcoming and non‑judgmental manner and respecting privacy, dignity and beliefs.

- Apply practice policies, standards and guidance.
- Discuss with team how policies influence own work.
- Participate in audit when appropriate.
- Essential – Experience of working in customer service.
- Desirable – Experience of working a GP practice.
