The Role
The Management Accountant will deliver accurate, timely, and insightful financial information
while ensuring robust financial controls and compliance. Reporting to the Head of Finance, this
hands-on role covers the full management accounting cycle, from ledgers and reconciliations to
management accounts, board reporting, and audit coordination. The postholder will drive process
and control improvements across Finance, collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders
throughout the business, and providing guidance to the wider team to ensure consistency, accuracy,
and high-quality outputs.
Core Responsibilities
- Oversee maintenance of the ledgers (general, cashbook, sales and purchase).
- Ensure accuracy of the ICO recharges for Final Mile carriers.
- Approve customer credit notes and supplier invoices in line with the Delegation of Authority
Matrix.
- Review and approve supplier payment runs and monthly payroll payments.
- Review the aged debt report weekly, ensuring adherence to the credit control policy and act
as an escalation point for the credit controller. Ensure accurate bad debt provisioning.
- Manage administration of legal debt recovery through the Thomas Higgins portal.
- Oversee the reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts, including duties and taxes, payroll
and pension.
- Own the preparation of accurate monthly management accounts, adhering to group
deadlines, performing first stage reviews, and providing insight to the Head of Finance.
- Prepare monthly board pack reports with supporting analysis and commentary.
- Support the submission of the group Consolidation Reporting Package (CRP).
- Oversee production of detailed variance analysis (vs budget, prior month, and prior year-todate)
with meaningful insights.
- Oversee monthly sales and margin reporting, attending margin calls and contributing
financial insight.
- Support in the preparation of budgets, forecasts and reforecasts.
- Support with cashflow forecasting and working capital management.
- Own submissions for monthly, quarterly, and annual ONS surveys, VAT returns, and P11Ds.
- Lead on sustainability reporting in line with audit and group requirements.
- Take a leading role in coordinating the internal and external audits and collaborating with
the Finance team and other stakeholders to provide information and resolve queries.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies and statutory/ regulatory
requirements.
- Lead reviewing, strengthening and documenting financial controls and policies across the
finance function.
- Maintain awareness of changes in accounting standards, tax legislation, and compliance
requirements, considering the implications for the business.
- Champion process automation and improved system utilisation across the finance function.
- Support any finance system upgrades, integrations, or migrations as required.
Contribute to financial analysis for key projects, business cases, or investments.
- Act as deputy to the Head of Finance during periods of absence, taking ownership for dayto-
day financial operations and reporting.
- Represent Finance in cross-functional meetings, ensuring finance is acting as an enabler to
support growth
Skills & Experience Required
- Part qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA), studying towards completing the qualification.
- Strong technical management accounting experience, ideally within the logistics industry.
- Excellent knowledge of accounting standards, VAT and other regulatory requirements.
- Advanced Excel skills; prior ERP system experience (eg Sage Intacct) desirable.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines.
- Highly analytical with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Committed to continuous improvement, innovation, and professional development.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex financial
information clearly.
