The Role

As a Healthcare Support Worker you will be working at the heart of our multidisciplinary teams delivering high quality, patient‑centred care. You will be supervised and report to a Registered Nurse, and you must communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals, both verbally and in writing, to share our commitment to maintaining high standards in everything we do. You should be able to work effectively within a team that behaves in accordance with our vision and values.

We seek an individual who is committed to delivering outstanding patient care and takes pride in what they do. A caring, professional manner and excellent communication skills are essential. You must work well in a high‑pressure environment and have the ability to adapt to challenging situations.

The post will be based in Acute Medicine Receiving Unit, a 68‑bedded unit that supports a 24/7 patient journey. This area provides inpatient care which is patient‑centred and aims to maximise each patient’s potential for recovery, supported by an excellent multidisciplinary team.

We are looking for an innovative individual with experience working within a healthcare setting, preferably acute care experience. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to demonstrate a caring attitude. Essential requirements include venepuncture, cannulation, blood glucose recording and wound care.

Your performance must comply with the national "Mandatory Induction Standards for Healthcare Support Workers 2009" and the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers. You will be required to achieve the mandatory induction standards for Healthcare Support Workers in Scotland and to comply with the Code of Conduct throughout your employment.

Band 2 roles are not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa routes.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
  • Location: Glasgow Royal Infirmary
  • Permanent contract
  • Full‑time position (36 hours per week) and part‑time position (22.3 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern: rotational 7‑day a week working days and nights
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse and, where appropriate, other members of the Clinical Team to deliver patient care.
  • Co‑operate with and maintain good relationships with other disciplines attending and treating clients to maximise patient care.
  • Maintain good relationships and an empathic approach to clients’ carers and relatives and refer them to a trained nurse for any questions they may have on the clients’ condition or for any suggestions or complaints that they wish to raise.
  • Report observed changes in the clients’ physical/psychological needs and participate in maintaining accurate and up‑to‑date records to ensure effective communication.
  • Work within divisional policies and procedures to ensure maintenance of safe working practices for patients and colleagues.
  • Adhere to ward and unit procedures for the use of supplies and equipment in order to promote the effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Share responsibilities for key aspects of housekeeping and stock control, demonstrating a good awareness of cost efficiency and thus contributing to the smooth running of the ward/department.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job
  • Caring disposition preferably with experience working in a caring environment/role.
  • Ability to work with people and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to carry out assigned tasks effectively in a busy environment.
  • Ability to fulfil the requirement of the job description, including undertaking NuCHE programme.
