What job opportunities are there in Design?

  • Architect: Are you interested in buildings, structural designs, and playing a valuable role in large-scale projects? Architects design, plan and work with a team to implement their ideas for buildings and construction. This is a great role for someone who is both creative and analytical, as you will need to come up with new designs for building plans, but you will also require the math skills to make it work. There are different kinds of architects, so you could work as a commercial or residential architect designing buildings and homes, or you could focus on nature and the outdoors as either a sustainability-focused or landscape architect.
  • Design: The best way to be successful as a designer is to work in a field you are passionate about and inspired by. If you love renovating home spaces, you might like working as an interior designer; if you’re curious about modern furniture design, you may find happiness in a career with that. If you love clothes, fabrics, and modern style then getting a job as a fashion designer or textile designer might be the best option for you. If you are enthralled by luxury goods, designing jewellery might be the right move for you, where you can work with metals and different materials focusing on intricate details. There are so many open designer opportunities for you if you put yourself out there!
  • Digital designer: If you’re captivated by the advancement of technology and digital art, then perhaps exploring career options in the digital design space would be perfect for you. While graphic designers can create and sell their digital art just like any other artist, they are also valuable for businesses to create logos, product and packaging designs, advertisements, digital content, and much more. Other career paths to explore are web designers or more specifically UI/UX designers, focused on improving the customer experience. If you’re interested in one of these careers but don’t have any experience, why not take a computer class in graphic or web design?
