Consultant Gastroenterologist – Inflammatory Bowel Disease Job Overview

This is a whole‑time Consultant position in Gastroenterology at Whiston Hospital, Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. The post offers multidisciplinary acute care and the opportunity to develop a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide comprehensive gastrointestinal services, including advanced therapeutic endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), hepatology and management of malignant and nutritional disorders.
  • See patients with General Internal Medicine (GIM) problems.
  • Work with the existing workforce to meet increased demand in gastroenterology and endoscopy services.
  • Develop a special interest in IBD to complement existing services.
  • Contribute to the out‑of‑hours (OOH) Gastroenterology/GI Bleed rota.
  • Deliver care on a 33‑bed ward and support specialist upper GI and colorectal surgeons.
  • Participate in the monthly joint medical/surgical IBD clinic.
Person specification Qualifications
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) at the time of application.
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualifications.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via one of the following routes: Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR), or European Community Rights.
  • European Specialty Examination in Gastroenterology and Hepatology (ESEGH).
  • MSc, MD, PhD, or equivalent.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) provider.
  • Membership of appropriate societies.
Knowledge and Experience
  • Appropriate knowledge base and sound clinical judgement in Gastroenterology/GIM.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience for managing, supervising or offering expert opinion on a range of gastrointestinal problems, both emergency and elective.
  • Advanced training in IBD medicine at a tertiary centre.
  • Demonstrated competence in the Acute Medicine curriculum relevant to this post.
  • Research experience with NIHR AI or PI training.
Skills
  • JAG accreditation in diagnostic/therapeutic upper & lower GI endoscopy.
  • Ability to undertake robust audit/QIP within the last 3 years.
  • Research/publication/presentation in General Medicine/Gastroenterology in peer‑reviewed journals or national meetings within the last 3 years.
  • Management & leadership experience.
  • Teaching experience and ability to organise education sessions for trainees and healthcare learners.
  • Clinical supervisor skills and GMC educational supervisor recognition or a plan to achieve it.
  • Experience of supervising medical students, Foundation Programme trainees and Higher Specialist trainees.
  • Endoscopy training the trainers.
