Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • There will be a number of clinical sessions initially starting with supplementing the current upper GI Physiology service.
  • There is growing demand for this service with an active benign upper GI service supported by a team of eight luminal gastroenterologist and four upper GI surgeons. Secondary and tertiary referrals are received to the unit where procedures are performed including high resolution manometry/impedance manometry, ambulatory 24 hour pH monitoring and impedance-pH monitoring.
  • The post-holder would also be expected to get involved with wireless pH monitoring, hydrogen methane breath testing, Urea breath testing and potentially the capsule endoscopy service.
  • We have recently received funding to provide a lower GI physiology service which includes anorectal manometry and endoanal ultrasound.
  • Work according to professional standards and guidelines of the Association Gastrointestinal Physiologist (AGIP)
  • The candidate would assist in developing and initiating this service. The candidate is expected to carry out sessions independently and provide a high standard of clinical reports to sending to the referring clinicians/discussing at MDT's.
  • To supervise/assist in gastroenterological procedures, GI physiology investigations, food intolerance breath tests and capsule endoscopy
  • To contribute to supporting colleagues to meet the 18 week pathway.
  • To provide timely reports and communicate with GPs and other health professionals the outcome of clinical appointments in a timely fashion.
  • To run twice monthly benign upper GI meetings, and weekly GI physiology meetings, contributing to the discussion and treatment planning/ referral decisions.

Education&Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Relevant Scientist degree in Clinical Physiology (GI Physiology) or equivalent experience
  • Successful completion of the STP in GI Physiology
  • Registered or working towards registration with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS), Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP) or the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)


Desirable criteria
  • Eligible (or about to imminently be eligible) for associate membership of the British Society of Gastroenterology compliant with the accreditation requirements of the Association of Gastrointestinal Physiologists (AGIP) as an independent practitioner in Gastrointestinal Physiology


Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of medical procedures and terminology
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Commitment to CME and professional development.


Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understand the national and local guidelines and procedures required to perform and prioritise clinical tests and demonstrate that they can carry these out to the required standards.
  • Strong underpinning knowledge of Medical Physiology
