Drivers for Survivors, Manchester

Drivers for Survivors, Manchester
Description

Overview

We are looking for volunteers to drive Holocaust survivors from London to The National Holocaust Museum (Beth Shalom) in Nottinghamshire. No ongoing commitment is required. Volunteer opportunities occur once or twice a year, or once a month; all help is appreciated. We will cover fuel costs, provide lunch, give you a museum tour, and offer free membership to our friends scheme. There is also an opportunity to spend the day with one of the survivors.

A central part of our work is giving young people the opportunity to hear directly from a Holocaust survivor. These personal testimonies connect students with the reality of the Holocaust in a meaningful and human way. Beth Shalom, named by the survivor community, was created to be a place of welcome, memory, and education. We work with around 20 survivors; travelling from London to Nottinghamshire is increasingly difficult for them as they grow older. We will cover all travel expenses, provide lunch and a guided tour of the Museum, and offer complimentary access to our Friends programme, including invitations to special events and educational opportunities. Each time someone drives a survivor to the Museum, it saves the charity about £500 and enables more groups of students to meet a survivor in person.

We are committed to ensuring as many young people as possible have the chance to meet survivors, hear their stories, and carry their words forward into the future.

What you will get out of volunteering for us

Each time a survivor comes to The National Holocaust Museum, young people have the opportunity to meet them, listen to their story, ask questions and learn from the past. Driving a survivor helps provide that learning opportunity for students to meet an eyewitness.

The National Holocaust Museum

The National Holocaust Museum occupies a distinctive place within the UK’s cultural and educational landscape. Unique in name and rural location, we play a nationally significant role in Holocaust remembrance and education. We are the only Holocaust museum in the world that grew out of the rural home of a Christian family. This origin story informs the Museum’s buildings, gardens and educational programmes with a spirit of compassion and reflective learning.
