Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP), Newport
Description
Post No. POSN005089 -Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP)

A duty only AMHP role, with no allocated caseload.

This post has been created to strengthen our duty rota, reduce reliance on agency cover, and ensure that complex decisions are carried out well - never in isolation.

About the role

Newport City Council is seeking a qualified Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to join our all age AMHP service on a 12-month basis.

This is a duty focused role, undertaking the screening of referrals and convening of Mental Health Act assessments across an all-age service via a single point of entry. You will act as an autonomous decision maker on behalf of the Local Authority, within a service that values lawful practice, sound and proportionate professional judgement, and shared accountability.

This is a time limited role, created to provide additional capacity and strengthen our AMHP resource. The post will be reviewed towards the end of the 12 month period to understand its longer term impact.

About the AMHP service

Our AMHP service plays a central role in safeguarding some of the most vulnerable people in Newport. We are known for being calm under pressure, practical in approach, and strongly grounded in professional respect. We work closely with partners such as ABUHB and Gwent Police.

We consistently receive feedback from agency AMHPs that this is one of the most helpful and supportive teams they have worked with. This reflects how we work every day:

- Complex decisions are shared
- Debriefs are routine
- Peer support is actively encouraged
- No one carries difficult work alone

You will be supported by accessible managers who understand the realities of AMHP practice and who place strong emphasis on reflective supervision, professional integrity, and wellbeing.

What we're looking for

You will:
- Be a qualified and warranted Approved Mental Health Professional
- Hold current registration with the appropriate professional body
- Have experience working with people experiencing mental health difficulties
- Be confident undertaking Mental Health Act assessments independently
- Be able to contribute positively to a rota based service
- Experience within an all age AMHP service is desirable but not essential.

What we offer

- A duty only AMHP role with no caseload
- Grade 10 salary
- A supportive, experienced AMHP service
- Clear and manageable rota arrangements
- A realistic, respectful approach to work-life balance

We welcome applications from permanent AMHPs and from agency practitioners who may be considering a temporary or fixed term post.
