Job Overview

Job Title: Teacher – Nursery

Reports To: Principal

Key Responsibilities
  • Exercise general professional duties as a nursery teacher under the direction of the principal or board.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver courses and lessons for nursery pupils.
  • Teach children according to their educational needs, setting, marking and recording work.
  • Assess, record and report on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
  • Promote pupils’ general progress and well‑being and provide appropriate advice and guidance.
  • Communicate and consult with parents and carers and with external agencies where approved.
  • Participate in meetings, staff development schemes, performance reviews and professional development activities.
  • Maintain good discipline and safeguard pupils’ health and safety in line with policies.
  • Assist with public examinations preparations and support activities as required.
  • Contribute to the selection, induction and supervision of other teachers and support staff.
  • Carry out administrative tasks related to curriculum, organization and pastoral functions.
Essential Criteria
  • Hold a teaching qualification recognized for grant‑aid schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Minimum one year of demonstrable experience teaching nursery pupils with positive learning outcomes.
  • Experience using effective classroom strategies and inclusive teaching for children with SEND and medical needs.
  • Experience using digital media and technology to engage parents, plan and enhance learning.
  • Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.
  • Secure working knowledge of Pre‑School Education and Early Childhood Development guidance.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, child protection policy and SEND Code of Practice.
  • Knowledge of teaching strategies, ICT and assessment methods for preschool pupils.
  • Effective teaching, classroom management, digital and collaboration skills.
  • Evidence of alignment with the school’s values and ethos.
Desirable Criteria
  • Minimum two years of experience teaching nursery pupils with positive learning outcomes.
  • Completion of EPD 1 and EPD 2 early posts by start of appointment.
  • Specialist background in Early Years or Early Childhood Studies.
  • Experience as Designated Teacher or Deputy for Child Protection.
  • Experience in monitoring pupil progress, PLP writing and curriculum improvement projects.
  • Qualifications supporting teaching of children with communication delays or non‑verbal needs.
  • Experience promoting links with parents, carers and families.
  • Experience as Teacher Representative on a Board of Governors.

Employment Terms: This role is full‑time, available for 1,265 hours per year (excluding preparation and marking outside school). Minimum 195 working days with up to 190 teaching days.
