The Role

You need to have a live NMC UK pin in order to be considered for this post. As a Medical Secretary with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, you will play a vital role in supporting Consultants and clinical teams to deliver safe, effective and patient‑centred care. You will be a key point of contact for patients, relatives and multidisciplinary colleagues, helping to coordinate care pathways with professionalism and compassion. This is a varied, fast‑paced role where your organisational skills, initiative and attention to detail will make a real difference every day.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
  • Glasgow Royal Infirmary
  • Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:30
  • Please note the salary is pro rata for part‑time hours
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative support to Consultant(s) and their clinical teams
  • Manage complex diaries, correspondence, clinic preparation and audio‑typing to support effective patient care
  • Act as a first point of contact for patients, relatives and staff, handling enquiries with sensitivity, tact and professionalism
  • Coordinate clinics, referrals, admissions and investigations to support smooth patient pathways and waiting list management
  • Use electronic patient systems to update records, process referrals and support discharge and follow‑up arrangements
  • Prioritise and manage a busy workload independently while maintaining confidentiality and high standards of accuracy
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across services and provide cross‑cover and support when required
Knowledge, Training, Qualifications and/or Experience Required to Do the Job
  • HNC or SVQ Level III in Secretarial Studies or Business Administration, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Proven experience of providing high‑quality administrative or secretarial support, ideally within healthcare
  • Advanced keyboard and audio‑typing skills with excellent accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines
  • Confidence using IT systems including Microsoft Office applications and electronic patient record systems
  • Knowledge of medical terminology or demonstrable willingness to develop this knowledge
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
