Principal Systems Engineer, Southampton

The candidate will be expected to be able to install, set to work and present the Leonardo Message Handling System for acceptance on-board a wide range of different RN platforms, both Sub-surface and surface fleet. They will need to be able to liaise and work with the Platform Management teams, Leonardo colleagues, Ship staff and installation subcontractors ensuring that installations run to plan. The Candidate will also be involved in the test and acceptance activities for new message handling developments. The will be expected to support the design team in both the production of the Test and acceptance documentation and the creation of Installation guidance packs. The candidate will be expected to support live high grade messaging and naval communication systems, which will involve telephone, email and on-site support (UK Ports). They will be required to analyse and resolve issues under pressure, and will sometimes require travel at short notice. All support is managed through the Leonardo Service Management System and the Candidate will be expected to ensure that all engineering support data is maintained within the system. Key Responsibility Areas Liaising with the Customer stakeholders and ship staff Formal Acceptance of the messaging systems Working with and assisting the Integration and acceptance team and creating associated guidance packs Regularly SOFT (Success, Opportunity, Failure and Threat) Reporting Working within the defined Work Package and allocated hours Problem ownership and solution descriptions Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required The Candidate must be an experienced specialist Engineering Technician in communication and information systems with proven supervisory and communications skills. The Candidate must have knowledge of Royal Navy communications procedures and familiarisation of external communications equipment on-board both surface and sub-surface platforms. The Candidate must have good understanding of networking and windows operating systems. The Candidate must work efficiently within a team as well as an individual The Candidate must have a logical and effective approach to problem solving and able to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Familiar with Microsoft Office. Willing to travel at short notice to UK ports Willing to travel to Foreign Ports The Candidate must have good leadership skills and be able to manage teams of sub-contractors during installation of systems on-board RN platforms. The Candidate will be required to produce test and acceptance specifications and to be able to present systems to MoD acceptance authorities on board RN platforms. Ideally they should have a proven track record in the management/maintenance of automated message handling systems.
