Systems Design Authority - Team TEMPEST (Comms), Southampton

Leonardo have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Chief Engineer (CE) / Systems Design Authority (SDA) to lead the development of the next generation of SATCOM and high rate inter vehicle data links (IVDL), from concept through to flight trials. The role will include the definition of Antenna, RF processing, modems (including waveform specification), network routing, security and system management. This will require detailed working with UK and international partners. The CE/SDA will be responsible for the definition of the technical solution and design integrity for the whole Comms solution (both the Leonardo and partner elements) of the Team TEMPEST project. This role will provide unique exposure to a variety of communications products and subject-matter experts, as well as the ability to interact directly with the Team TEMPEST community to understand their operational needs and directly apply this knowledge to the demonstration phase and future product capability enhancements. Key Responsibility Areas Oversee the direction of the Comms Teams technical solutions to ensure they match stakeholder needs. * To provide direction, control, evaluation and recommendations relating to technical risks and opportunities. * To ensure robust quality, performance, cost and time trade-offs are undertaken and then to establish the technical solution coherent with the agreed budgets and timescales. * To ensure the product is compliant with the customer's needs * To validate the effectiveness of the extant enabling systems (processes, toolsets, reviews, reporting, communication). * To mentor junior team members. * Development of close relationships with key internal/external partner organisations, sub-contractors and key stakeholders to understand, interpret, and (where appropriate) influence, current and future user needs and requirements. * Technical co-ordination of activities performed by other Leonardo teams and subcontractors. * Represent the team at major working groups and reviews from a technical perspectiveSkills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required You must have: * Demonstrate substantial experience with SATCOM communications, and or IVDL at system and sub-system level. * Experience of communication systems implementation, including knowledge of standards, SATCOM network operations, link budgets, architectures, waveforms, and baseband routing and protocols. * Knowledge of the engineering lifecycle and associated business processes. Including the ability to demonstrate experience of leading development of a communication product from concept through design, implementation, verification, certification and validation; * Experience of leading multi-discipline teams and working with external stakeholders. * Demonstrable experience of delivering capability with multi discipline teams * Substantial analytical and technical problem solving skills. * Self-motivated leader and team player capable of working with minimum direction. * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, proven ability to build trust and respect at different levels. * Experience in gaining design certification and customer acceptance. * Typically meets the requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer with the ECUK. Coordinate multi-stakeholder analysis into reports and presentations for delivery to customers & industry partners. Graduate degree in relevant engineering or related scientific discipline
