The Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance (AWWA) is seeking a seasonal Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Crew Leader to lead our summer technical assistance program. Working to protect water quality across lakes and ponds in Wakefield, NH, and Acton, ME, the Crew Leader will direct a YCC team in installing erosion‑control landscape features to reduce stormwater pollution and educate homeowners on how stormwater can affect water quality. These projects look to beautify landscapes while also infiltrating runoff. The Crew Leader will help train and supervise the crew in implementing erosion control plans designed by the Program Coordinator.

The Crew Leader serves as a public representative of the Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance and the YCC crew. Her/his behavior should always be helpful and courteous to property owners, interested members of the public, and the crew. We expect the Crew Leader to be an enthusiastic representative of the YCC program and to participate in public presentations to promote the program's continuation.

Responsibilities
  • Overseeing and managing a staff of youth crew members;
  • Sharing the AWWA mission with local landowners and community members;
  • Working with the Program Coordinator and YCC crew to design and install Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce pollution caused by erosion and stormwater runoff. BMPs may include planting vegetated buffers or rain gardens to catch water and sediment; stabilizing trails, and/or filling with crushed stone or mulch; installing water bars to redirect runoff; digging infiltration trenches and drywells; and installing infiltration steps.
  • Assisting with presentations to community stakeholders to illustrate AWWA accomplishments.
  • Maintaining careful records of all YCC activities, including daily activities and timesheets.
  • Maintaining tools and inventory for YCC projects.
Education/Skills Required

This position requires a person who can work with the Program Coordinator to understand and implement the erosion control designs and train the crew in Best Management Practices. She/he should have some experience or training in environmental practices and safe landscaping work habits. Preference will be given to those with an environmentally driven career path or to those studying environmental science or a similar field. This person will take responsibility for leading and working with a high school‑age crew. He/she should be physically fit and able to do 8 hours of labor a day, using hand tools such as shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes, picks, and hoes. It requires someone who is comfortable interacting with stakeholders and homeowners and promoting the goals of the YCC. The recommended minimum age is 19. A driver’s license is required for transporting crew members and materials/tools.
