Consultant in Hepatology

Whipps Cross University Hospital

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Hepatologist at Whipps Cross University Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust.

Barts Health is one of Britain's leading healthcare providers and the largest NHS trust, serving a diverse population across East London and beyond. Formed in 2012, the Trust has an annual turnover of approximately£1.1 billion and employs around 15,000 staff.

Together, our hospitals deliver high-quality clinical care to the communities we serve. Our vision is to become a world-class healthcare organisation, addressing longstanding health inequalities and working closely with our partners and local populations.

The successful candidate will join a team of 13 established gastroenterology consultants and play a key role in delivering hepatology services at Whipps Cross Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the provision of inpatient and outpatient care for patients with liver disease and hepatology-related conditions. This includes the management of acute and chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and its complications, and abnormal liver function tests, with close collaboration with regional hepatology and transplant centres where appropriate.

The appointee will be encouraged to develop their specialist hepatology interests and contribute to the expansion of liver services. This includes areas such as advanced liver disease management, viral hepatitis, metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, liver cancer pathways, and community-based hepatology care.

The role includes participation in endoscopy, including the GI bleed rota, and involvement in the Gastroenterologist of the Week rota (1:10), providing senior clinical leadership for inpatient gastroenterology and hepatology services, including ward cover and acute referrals.

There are well-established multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings in hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) medicine, alongside strong links with radiology and pathology services. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to hepatology-focused MDT working and service development.

Participation in the general medical rota is optional (currently 1:30 weekdays, no weekends).
