Reports To: Nursery Manager
As a Lunchtime Assistant, you will ideally hold a Level 2 Early Years qualification and apply your early years knowledge to support the nursery during busy daytime periods. You will support all kitchen‑related duties including washing up, cleaning, food preparation, cooking, record keeping and assisting the rooms to provide an educational and social eating experience. At busier periods you may be required to support with laundry, housekeeping duties and children’s sleep times.
Work schedule: 10am – 2pm, Monday – Friday, all year round.
Responsibilities Deliver- Support in the preparation of healthy and nutritious meals and snacks from approved Cherubs Nurseries menus.
- Take an active role championing cooking and baking across all nursery areas, including baking with children and preparing additional food for nursery events such as Parent’s Evening and Summer Fair.
- Remove kitchen waste regularly (appropriately and hygienically) and dispose of it in the correct bins.
- Assist in ensuring all meals are ready at the correct times, meeting company and setting deadlines and guidelines.
- Ensure the children’s environment and nursery is kept safe, secure and clean at all times, adhering to safeguarding policies.
- Be a role model for the children at all times, while demonstrating best practice to colleagues.
- Ensure all toys, equipment and furniture are kept clean and in good working order, sterilising toys when necessary or required by policy.
- Assist in supervising meal times, ensuring this remains a learning opportunity where positive eating practices are learnt and developed.
- Stay up to date and compliant with all Cherubs Nurseries policies and procedures.
- Ensure correct temperature of all food, especially high‑risk food before service.
- Be aware of health and safety legislation relevant to the nursery kitchen.
- Assist in maintaining a high standard of hygiene, cleanliness and organisation in the kitchen.
- Support in maintaining clean kitchen equipment such as the oven, microwave, fridge and freezers.
- Identify busy periods across rooms and plan support accordingly.
- Ensure all rooms have ample clean crockery, cutlery and utensils to provide a smooth lunch service.
- Maintain high sanitation levels of mealtime areas and support children’s cleanliness after meals (e.g., changing clothes or cleaning faces).
- Ensure all children have a clearly labelled bedding bag and clean bedding, and assist in setting up the environment per Cherubs Nurseries policies.
- Cover Early Years Educators’ breaks when required, after a thorough handover.
- Cover the Nursery Chef when required.
- Present yourself professionally at all times, dressed for service.
- Collaborate with Senior Early Years Educators to implement improvements to mealtime routines.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times, both inside and outside the workplace.
- Regularly review allergies and dietary sheets for compliance.
- Attend both in‑house and external training as required; some may be outside working hours, e.g., weekends.
- Complete all PLA training relevant to the role within 7 days of issue.
- Assist in the thorough planning and delivery of a variety of activities (indoor and outdoor) to maintain children’s interests and support their development in line with individual needs.
- Ensure any information you receive is shared promptly with the relevant people.
- Establish and maintain friendly yet professional relationships with all parents and staff.
- Ensure educators supervise mealtimes and wear correct PPE at all times.
- Attend staff events including Parent’s Evening, staff meetings and Summer Fairs; some may be outside working hours and on weekends.
- Undertake any other duties reasonably regarded as within the nature of the role.
- Educated to GCSE Level (or equivalent).
- Level 2 Early Years Educator qualification is desirable but not essential.
- Food Safety in Catering Certificate (can be completed with us).
- Experience working with young children is advantageous but not essential.
- Experience supporting catering for individuals with allergies and dietary requirements is advantageous but not essential.
- Experience preparing food for young children is advantageous but not essential.
