Supporting Young People with SEMH Needs
Teaching Personnel are seeking a compassionate, resilient and dedicated 1:1 Teaching Assistant to join a specialist alternative provision in Wigan. This is a full‑time role with an immediate start, ideal for someone who is truly passionate about supporting young people who require additional emotional and behavioural support.
About the SettingThis provision is a specialist alternative education setting that supports pupils who have struggled to thrive in mainstream education. The school provides a structured, nurturing, and supportive environment, focused on helping students re‑engage with learning and build positive relationships.
Many pupils have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, and may display challenging behaviours. Staff work closely as a team to offer consistent, therapeutic approaches, enabling students to achieve both academically and personally.
The RoleAs a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with a specific pupil, providing tailored support to help them access the curriculum and develop key life skills.
Your responsibilities will include:- Providing 1:1 support in and out of the classroom
- Building a positive, trusting relationship with your allocated pupil
- Supporting the pupil’s emotional regulation and behaviour management
- Assisting with lesson delivery and adapting materials to meet individual needs
- Implementing behaviour plans and working alongside teaching staff and SENCOs
- Encouraging engagement, independence, and resilience
- Supporting with pastoral care and wellbeing
We are looking for individuals who are empathetic, patient, and proactive, with a genuine desire to make a difference.
- Experience working with SEMH needs (education, youth work, care, or similar)
- A nurturing and resilient personality
- Strong behaviour management skills
- A valid DBS certificate on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
- Ability to commit to a full‑time role (Monday–Friday)
- A passion for supporting young people who face barriers to learning

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
