Promise Inclusion is a local, independent and user-led charity supporting children and adults with learning disabilities and/or autism, their carers and families within Wokingham and Bracknell. We are seeking to appoint a new Chair to our Board.
What difference will you make?
“I took on the role of Trustee after volunteering with the charity. Lots of online training was provided, which I found very helpful while I found my feet; I had previously served as a school governor, but while there are similarities, there are also a lot of differences. I have found the experience very rewarding and extremely interesting and am now the Chair of Trustee, a role which I greatly enjoy. It is good to get an in-depth understanding of the way a charity works and make a worthwhile contribution. The commitment is really not onerous.”
“Serving as a Trustee with PINC has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It’s allowed me to support a community and cause that I might not have had the opportunity to engage with otherwise.”
“When I moved across to a portfolio career, I wanted to keep time aside to support a charity with a purpose I can personally connect with. Bringing my career experience to Promise Inclusion (PINC) has been really fulfilling for me. Hearing about the impact of the work that PINC does in their local community is what makes being a Trustee so rewarding."
What are we looking for?- As chair, you should have a real interest and understanding of Promise Inclusion and be willing to learn about the charity and the sector; this may be based on lived experience.
- You should have a passion for the work Promise Inclusion is doing.
- You must have experience of governance and the legal responsibilities of the board.
- You must be confident in dealing with and leading change.
- You need sound judgement, able to make measured and fair decisions.
- You must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Our current chair is stepping down after a few years in the role but remaining as a volunteer.
As chair you will play a significant role on the board and within the charity providing leadership and direction and ensuring the charity moves forward with its priorities focusing on its sustainability.
Your role will be to make sure that everyone is included and gives their views; no one dominates discussion; there is open, focussed and frank discussion to clarify issues and address challenges; there is a clear decision-making process; conflicts within the board are properly addressed; retain a good and supportive relationship with the CEO, Development Manager and other staff members.
This is a challenging time for small charities and in 2026 the charity is focused on renewing several of our long term funding contracts alongside looking for other sources of funding and continuing its day to day work.
