An easy way to break into the field is to start as a retail sales associate or representative, where you would work in a store helping customers shop and checkout while maintaining the store’s appearance. Then you could move up to a store manager or assistant store manager position where you would be responsible for the running and performance of the shop. If you are more interested in the product being sold, you may prefer a role in purchasing. Working as a merchandiser or purchaser would enable you to choose the products to be sold at the retail establishment, and monitor product appearance and supply. Or, you could work in as an inventory associate or manager, working in the storage rooms of a shop to monitor the inventory and keep track of the supply. But if you want to work directly with customers, and you are good with people and can be persuasive, then working in sales may be better suited for you. There are so many different types of sales roles at different companies, so take your time to properly read through each job description. If you have no experience in sales, you can likely find listings for sales associates or representatives that are willing to train you. If you already have a few years of experience under your belt, check out positions for sales managers or account managers.
